Engagement ring vs wedding ring: what's the difference?
29 September 2026 · Burrows Jewellers
It’s a question we hear quite often in the store: are engagement rings and wedding rings actually the same thing?
The short answer is no. They’re different pieces of jewellery with different roles in the marriage journey.
That said, the way couples use them today can be a little more flexible than many people realise. Let’s walk through the difference so you can feel confident about what each ring represents and when you’ll need them.
The Short Answer
Engagement rings and wedding rings are not the same.
-
An engagement ring is given when someone proposes.
-
A wedding ring (often called a wedding band) is exchanged during the wedding ceremony.
Most couples end up with two separate rings, although it is technically possible to use the same ring for both if that suits the couple.
What an Engagement Ring Is
An engagement ring marks the moment someone asks, “Will you marry me?”
Traditionally, this ring is chosen by the proposer and given during the proposal. In many cases, it features a centre stone, most commonly a diamond, set in gold or platinum.
Engagement rings tend to:
-
Have a centre gemstone
-
Be more detailed or decorative
-
Represent the promise of marriage
Because of the design and the centre stone, engagement rings are usually more expensive than wedding bands.
In our experience, most proposers still prefer to choose this ring themselves, often with a bit of nervous excitement about getting it right.
What a Wedding Ring Is
A wedding ring is exchanged during the wedding ceremony itself.
Wedding rings are typically simpler bands that symbolise the marriage rather than the proposal. They’re designed for everyday wear and are often chosen together as a couple closer to the wedding date.
Wedding rings usually:
-
Are simple bands (plain or with small diamonds)
-
Sit next to the engagement ring
-
Are designed for comfort and everyday wear
Many brides specifically look for a wedding ring that fits neatly alongside their engagement ring, so the two rings work together visually.
How Couples Usually Wear Them
There’s no strict rule about how the rings must be worn.
Some people:
-
Wear both rings together every day
-
Wear only their wedding ring most of the time
-
Keep the engagement ring for special occasions
Lifestyle often plays a role here. For example, people with hands-on jobs sometimes choose to wear just the wedding band day-to-day.
The important thing is that the rings feel comfortable and meaningful for the person wearing them.
Can You Use One Ring for Both?
Yes, although it’s less common.
Some couples choose to use the engagement ring as their wedding ring as well, especially if the design is simple or symbolic enough to represent both moments.
However, most couples still prefer to have two rings because each one represents a different stage:
-
The engagement
-
The wedding ceremony
A Common Question We Hear
One of the most common questions from proposers is:
“Do I need to buy the wedding ring at the same time as the engagement ring?”
The answer is no.
Most people buy the engagement ring first, enjoy the proposal and engagement period, and then come back later, usually a few months before the wedding, to choose wedding rings together.
This also gives the couple time to choose a band that fits perfectly with the engagement ring design.
The Real Difference
If we step back from the technical side, the difference is really about the moment each ring represents.
-
The engagement ring marks the promise.
-
The wedding ring marks the commitment made at the ceremony.
Both are meaningful, but they celebrate two different parts of the same story.
If You're Planning a Proposal
If you’re starting to think about proposing and feel unsure about the ring, that’s completely normal.
